I have been in the food business for many years, and one of the perks is that you receive free subscriptions to some really interesting food magazines. Many times, these magazines have great information about new food trends and sometimes they have some delicious food and cocktail recipes. This recipe was taken from one of those magazines, and I can honestly tell you that I have used it many times with great success. If you don’t like red wine, you can easily substitute white wine. I know that once you have tried this, you will use this recipe more frequently for your family cookouts this Summer, but it is perfect for anytime!
Red Sangria
½ cup strawberries, cut in half or quartered
¼ cup raspberries
¼ cup blueberries
¼ cup blackberries
1 orange, sliced thin
¼ cup water
4T sugar
3 cups red wine, good but inexpensive
¾ cup orange juice, fresh squeezed
¼ cup pomegranate juice
½ cup Grand Marnier, or other orange flavored liquor (optional)
2 cups sparkling water, add last before serving (or filtered water, if you prefer)
First you need to put the water and the sugar into a small pot to make the sugar syrup. Once it comes to a boil and all of the sugar is melted, cook for 1-2 minutes and remove from the heat and let cool. At this point, measure out all of your fruit, slice your orange and place in a separate bowl. If you do not like the fruits listed above, you can add your own combination of fruit…red, sweet grapes or pitted cherries are also delicious in this, but make sure to slice them in half. In your serving jug add the red wine, orange juice, Grand Marnier and sugar syrup and mix well. Add all of the fruit and chill well for about 1 hour to let all of the flavors come together. Right before you are ready to serve, add the sparkling water and serve over ice.
**For white sangria, add white wine and substitute peaches, nectarines, apricots, mango and sliced white grapes for the fresh fruit
