Safeway BBQ Battle, 2011, Washington DC

You may be just waking up on this lazy Sunday morning and wondering what to do with yourself after an early nosh and a quick scan of the daily newspaper. I suggest you pack yourself and the family up and head down to the BBQ Battle in Washington DC which will be going on today from 11am thru 7:30pm between 9th and 14th streets and Pennsylvania. You can drive in or take the metro and get off at the Federal Triangle or Metro Center stops from either the the Orange or Red lines.  Make sure to purchase your tickets on their website because you will save a few dollars and it makes for a quicker entry. All proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, DC. Tickets are $11.24 including tax and fees on line and $13.24 at the door for adults and $5 for kids.

When you get in, make your way to the Safeway sample tent where many vendors are providing free food for everyone to sample…I was a little skeptical about this but was pleasantly surprised, especially with the BBQ rack of lamb that was provided…delicious! The only drawback to the sample tent is having to wait for up to an hour and a half to get through the line, but I will say that the food was plentiful and delicious…make sure to get some iced coffee from Keurig and put your name in the drawing to win one of their brewing machines. Here are some pix of the free food provided in the tent…amazing huh?

If you want to just get right to the food, there are many of the nation’s top BBQ competitors selling everything from pork ribs, steak sandwiches, brats, jumbo turkey legs, burgers of all kinds, bloomin’ onions, chocolate covered bacon, funnel cakes, hand shaved potato chips and so much more! I was also surprised to find that the food was offered in generous portions and very economically priced, which you don’t always find in other venues. The competition part for all of the different categories was judged on Saturday and prizes will be awarded to all the winners later today…that should be fun!

There are also several activities to keep the kids entertained.

There are lots of tables set up throughout but a large dining area is available on 14th street where you can sit and enjoy your food.

So…what are you waiting for…get going!
