I have been meaning to visit downtown Annapolis for a few weeks now, but with the recent spate of bad weather I had to postpone my visit. Yesterday was a glorious day in Annapolis, so I decided to finally go.
The reason?
Well, I heard of this great new little place that opened up in June of 2009 that sells crepes. Since I don’t live too far from Annapolis, I decided to get down there for lunch. The beautiful weather enticed many others to follow suit, so downtown Annapolis was buzzing today.
Finding Sofi’s was easy — it’s across the street from the Harbormaster right on the dock in Ego Alley, and all I had to do was follow the delicious smells wafting from their corner store. Once inside, the shop is small but very quaint and clean. There are a few tables outside where you can sit and wait for your crepes to be handed to you through their service windows, or you can just do like most people and enjoy the crepe while walking around the dock.
All the crepes are priced from $4-$8 and they have a decent selection of both savory and sweet crepes. The filled crepes are a good lunch size portion, but a little pricey, and not something you may want to indulge in regularly. However, I must say they were truly delicious! I bought the Thanksgiving crepe and a lemon and sugar dessert crepe. The Thanksgiving crepe had all the goodies you would find on your Thanksgiving table…delicious, moist turkey pieces with a lovely cranberry relish that is making me drool at the mere recollection. The lemon and sugar crepe was really not very lemony or sugary. It would have been nice to have some of the sugar caramelized on the outside or a little schmear of lemon curd inside, but alas, it was just as the menu suggested…a plain Jane. As an alternative, you may want to choose something with a dessert filling, since they do those well.
Stephanie, the owner said that business has been brisk since opening in 2009, and I believe that they are a great addition to the downtown landscape of mostly bars and sit down restaurants. Even though they are a franchise, all of the crepes are made to order…no frozen or pre-made crepes here! Doing it this way adds to the kitsch of the store, and happy customers leave with handfuls of filled, warm crepes just begging for a liplock.
You really must visit — Today, tomorrow, whenever…just go.
