Friday Night Cocktail: Simple But Elegant Kir

I was never a big drinker and usually my choice of drinks revolved around the more sweet “girly” drinks like Brandy Alexander and Kahlua & Crème…My first foray into more grownup drinks revolved around a lovely glass of Kir. Before I knew it, it became my regular drink of choice. As I got older, I began experimenting with different wines and food pairings, but the beauty of a lovely glass of Kir remains in its simplicity. It is a delicious and sweet aperitif that is perfect anytime and its traditional combination of dry white wine with crème de cassis (blackcurrant liquor) is seductive and addictive. If you substitute the white wine for champagne, you have a Kir Royale…so, whatever your pleasure, give this French cocktail a try next time.

Kir

1part crème de cassis

5 parts dry white wine

Twist of lemon

Blackberries **optional

Sugared glass rim **optional

Make sure to chill both the cassis and wine well. Measure out the crème de cassis and add it to your wine glass, then top that with the white wine. Doing it this way, the drink will be well mixed without having to stir. If you prefer to add more crème de cassis and less wine that is fine too. Serve simply with a twist of lemon.
